Peluso Microphone Lab Presents: Yellow Couch Sessions

The gents from The End of America stopped back by Yellow Couch Studio to perform a song by three other guys who know a thing or two about harmonies. Check out their performance of Crosby, Stills & Nash's "Helplessly Hoping". They do an incredible job with this haunting track and I think that the late winter sunlight deserves a nod for its supporting role in this video.
Here, the Peluso P-49 does an amazing job grabbing the full spectrum of their voices and P-47 never lets me down on any task it's given.

In November 2013, The Saint Johns were kind enough to take time out of their busy touring schedule to squeeze in a visit to Yellow Couch Studio. We made all three of them pile into my little vocal booth and then listened in stunned silence as they proceeded to do this. It's no wonder that despite having only released a (gorgeous) five-song EP, that The Saint Johns' music has been licensed by the shows "Nashville" and "Sons of Anarchy". They're gearing up to record their first full length and I can't wait to hear it.

Anthony D'Amato stopped by to sing a couple songs for us before his fantastic show later that evening with Valerie June. From the moment he sat down and started playing, I was transfixed. Pick up his album on New West Records "The Shipwreck to the Shore" here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-shipwreck-from-the-shore/id901597357
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's 2247se for Anthony's vocals. Clear and warm. We also paired that with their P-84 on the acoustic. I have to say, this is one of my favorite guitar tones I've had the pleasure of recording.

I love it when we're able to work with bands that fall outside of our normal offerings and such was the case with Rebirth Brass Band. I was so excited when they agreed to come in and play a track with us. Great dudes and such incredible musicians.
We used Peluso's tube ribbon TR-14 on the saxophone while the trumpet and trombone shared the 2247se in a figure 8 pattern. I placed the P-49 in a figure 8 between the bass drum and the tuba.

Glen Phillips: Amnesty
http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com
When I received the email asking if we'd be interested in featuring Toad the Wet Sprocket's Glen Phillips on the series, I may have actually squealed. I saw that band play at a small club in Florida when I was just 19 and have been a fan ever since. As demonstrated here, Glen's solo work is equally impressive and I only wish we could have recorded more songs.
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's stellar P-87 to capture Glen's always impressive vocals and their P-28 small diaphragm tube condenser on his guitar. I couldn't be more pleased with the results.

New West Records' Wild Moccasins is everything you want in a band: young, sexy, talented and original. It was a real treat having them in here and I'm really rooting for them to go all the way.
We were able to use the Peluso Trifecta: I've got their P-12 on lead vocals, P-49 holding down rhythm guitar/backing vocals and their 2247se on the lead guitar. I love the way this turned out!

Dangermuffin: Moonscapes
http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com

If one were to peruse my Spotify history, they would quickly discover my obsession with music from the 70's. It's warm, comforting and lush and the musicianship on display is always fantastic. Dangermuffin is a rare modern band capable of transporting me to that space and one need only to click the play button to understand why.
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's P-87 on the lead vocals and their P-28 (small diaphragm tube condenser) on his guitar. I want to talk about these two mics for a second. Peluso shipped them to me earlier this summer and I am in love with them. Placed in front of an acoustic guitar and vocalist, they automatically drop both elements into the mix with absolutely no fuss. The same can be said for the combo that we used on lead guitar/backing vocals for which we used the P-87 on guitar and my workhorse 2247se on vocals. Finally, we used the P-49 on the upright bass because that mic is unparalleled when it comes to capturing low-end nuance, and Peluso's P-12 on the bass vocals. Every time I plug in one of these microphones, I'm made grateful for Peluso's longstanding support of this series.

Kaleigh Baker, with whom I proudly share the distinction of hailing from Orlando, FL, has a voice that grabs you and shakes you with such urgency that you can't help but be transfixed by it. We were lucky enough to have her stop by one hot summer afternoon to sing a couple songs for us off of her new release "Weary Hours", which you can (and should!) download here: http://kaleighbaker.com/merch/.
We used Peluso's P-12 to capture Kaleigh's dynamic vocals and strumming and then mic'd the Vox AC-15 (provided by our sponsors at Empire Music: http://www.empiremusiconline.com) with Peluso's tube ribbon TR-14. The results are honest and stunning.

Natalia Zukerman
How many people can you think of that you would be excited to work with at 10:00 on a Sunday morning? Probably not a lot, right? Well, you can add Natalia Zukerman to my list. She's instantly fun, funny, sings and plays her ass off and as she'll point out, her toenails are totally pro. These songs are from her new album: Come Thief, Come Fire, which you can buy here: (https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/com...)
I used Peluso Microphone Lab's (Peluso Microphone Lab) P-12 on Natalia's vocals and the P-84 on her acoustic. This combination has quickly become my first for solo performers. I have never not loved that 84 on a guitar.

I love me some sweet and pretty songs, but it's also a treat to hear something that shakes you. Trevor Sensor's music has a raw and urgent efficiency to it. It's just message and melody delivered by a voice you cannot ignore. Isaac's electric guitar and backing vocals add exactly what they need to. Really dig these two.

My wife called me and said that I needed to get to the Acoustic Stage to catch this act. She's never wrong about these things (or anything, really), so I hustled over and proceeded to get my mind blown by these two gifted young songwriters. Chloe and Madison both attend the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, though Madison is graduating and will be entering University of Southern California's singer-songwriter program in the fall. I expect great things from both of these promising young artists.
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's Vacuum Tube Bottle on Chloe's vocals and their P-84 small valve condenser on her ukulele. I used Peluso's P-12 on Madison's vocals, though I'm noticing that it slipped in the stand a bit after I sealed myself off behind the curtain—one of the perils of working quickly!

I first became aware of Christian Lopez a couple years back while I was down in Nashville. His name kept popping up as someone to watch. So I watched! We are ever so grateful to our sponsors:
Peluso Microphone Lab: http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com
Empire Music: http://www.empiremusic.com
We wanted to welcome new Brooklyn transplant Daniel Knishkowy (known in this context as Adeline Hotel: https://adelinehotel.bandcamp.com/) to Pittsburgh, so we invited him and his buddy Andrew in to sing a couple songs for us. This lovely track is called "Disarray" and like Daniel himself, it's a nice addition to our musical family. Adeline Hotel is also a featured artist on Pittsburgh's own Future Oak Records, which you should check out here: http://www.futureoakrecords.com/
We used Peluso's P-12 on Daniel's vocals and their P-84 on his guitar. These mics, coupled with the 2247se on Andrew's voice paint a pretty stunning portrait of this song. There's such remarkable warmth and clarity from this combination.

Color Fleet is one of my favorite discoveries of the festival. We didn't have the time to get the whole band in, but Lauren and Emma on their own are a force to be reckoned with. I love watching these two bobbing in perfect time together while bouncing really great guitar parts off of each other. Grateful to have worked with them.
We used Peluso's Vacuum Tube Bottle to pick up both Lauren's guitar and vocals. I used their P-12 on Emma's vocals and added a P-84 on the guitar. I have to say, I really love that VTB on Lauren's vocal.

Stereo Hideout: Sparks (original music by Coldplay, arranged by Steve Hackman- from 'Beethoven V. Coldplay')
Stereo Hideout is: Malia Civetz, Steve Hackman, Benjamin Jones, and Bill Prokopow
http://www.stereohideout.com/
http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com
Stereo Hideout is the brainchild of composer/conductor/producer Steve Hackman, a creative director and conductor with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Hackman has built a reputation for blurring the lines between classical and contemporary music as demonstrated through this gorgeous rendition of Coldplay's "Sparks" (from Beethoven V. Coldplay: https://youtu.be/buGTyV6dpSI). As if that wasn't enough to make me nervous about hosting them for the series, their session happened to take place on the hottest day of the festival and our air-conditioner had been turned off the night before. By the time we hit record, it had to be pushing 100 degrees in our little trailer. In fact, it was so hot that maybe 15 seconds before they wrapped up their first take, one of our 3M tabs we used to hold up our artwork gave way, causing one of Matt's wrapped canvas portraits to fall off of the wall. The band couldn't have been nicer about it and persevered through another equally gorgeous performance under what I can only describe as hostile conditions. So grateful to them for their patience and for sharing their considerable talents!
For this video, we close mic'd the Wurlitzer's' integrated speaker with Peluso's tube-ribbon TR-14. We then used the 2247se in an omni pattern to capture the vocals. Finally, I had the P-87 set up as a room mic. For this mix, I have the 2247 and the 87 hard panned to give this track what I would consider to be a pretty cool level of dimension.

After her set, we invited her to come record a video with us and end result is Rollin' Thunder. I think there's a bright future ahead for this young talent.
We used Peluso's P-87 on her vocal and paired with their P-28 small diaphragm tube condenser on the guitar. This is such a fun mic combo to use.

Bluegrass Day at the Three Rivers Arts Festival always brings some talented pickers and singers. Pittsburgh string band, The Armadillos were able to sneak in after their impressive set to shoot a quick video with us, and we’re awfully glad that they did.
The two lead vocals share Peluso’s P-87 in a figure 8 pattern, while the banjo and accordion split the P-12, which is also in a figure 8. I have their P-28 on the acoustic guitar and if I had my way, I would probably never use another mic on acoustic guitars.

Partisan Records' Christopher Denny is an open book. In his songs and in speaking to him, his goodness and honesty shine right through. Plus, he has this voice! I do love me a good signature voice and Christopher has very few peers.

In this sharp white suit and with his distinct features, Robert Ellis really stood out at the Market Square Starbucks on a Friday afternoon. It's good that he did, because it gave me an opportunity to approach him ask if he'd be interested in taking part in the series. Our conversation went something like this:
"Do you have an amp?"
"We have an AC-15 (from Empire Music!)"
"Is it air-conditioned?"
"Yep!"
"Cool, I'm in."
Robert hung out with us for four songs while a storm blew in that would eventually cancel his opening set for Richard Thompson—something I was really looking forward to catching. We used Peluso Microphone Lab's 224se on Robert's classic crooner voice and their tube ribbon TR-14 on the Vox AC15.

Gena y Pena: Como Fue (Composer: Ernesto Duarte Brito)
http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com
This is maybe my favorite thing about doing this series - hitting record and hearing a song that I've never heard before and being utterly gobsmacked by it. Such was the case with Gena y Pena, who performed on the main stage at the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. Every element is beautiful on its own and when they all team up, you have yourself one spectacular song.
These arts fest sessions go down pretty quickly, so I'm not always able to get everyone's name. For Gena, who is singing lead, we used Peluso's P-12. I placed a P-49 on the bass amp and used the P-87 in a figure 8 pattern to capture the voice and congas. Finally, we used the P-28 on the guitar.

I can think of very few bands that seem to derive as much joy from playing music as the guys from Gypsy & His Band of Ghosts and after listening to their music, it's easy to understand why. This band is pure fun - fantastic songs, everyone is great at what they do and the harmonies are flat out spectacular. They're in the process of recording a new album and if these songs are any indication, it's sure to be amazing.
We used Puluso Microphone Lab's (www.pelusomicrophonelab.com) P-12 on its omni setting to capture the vocals and a P-84, which, quite frankly, is the best damn small condenser I've ever had the privilege of using, on Giuseppe's acoustic guitar. I also used Peluso's TR-14 tube-ribbon mic on Diego's amp. Eventually Peluso is going to make me give all these microphones back and that makes me very sad, as I've grown to love them each in ways that I'm not certain I would describe as healthy.

Bobby Long
So Yellow Couch Studio is not exactly a pristine recording environment. We have dogs that are likely to lose their marbles at any moment and start barking, thereby ruining whatever take we're working on. Each time Bobby started singing, I just sat there with my fingers crossed hoping that nothing would happen to interrupt the take. We got lucky each time and these are the results.
Bobby Long was the first artist on whom we tried Peluso's P-12. I am eternally grateful to them for letting me use this beautiful machine! I love everything they've sent me, but this is right at the top of the list. It's paired with their 2247se. What more could you ever need?

The Color Fleet is one of my favorite discoveries of the festival.

Jimbo reminds me of that cool uncle you always rush to at family gatherings because he tells you dirty jokes and gives you a couple sips off his drink. He's a true entertainer and he and his band make some really fun and sneakily poignant music. They also really fill up that couch.
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's Vacuum Tube Bottle to capture Jimbo's vocals and guitar. We have the 2247se on Jason's guitar and P49 on the Ampeg BA10. I placed the P-12 in the room on omni to capture some of the vibe in the room.

Freedy Johnston: http://www.freedyjohnston.com
When I got the email asking if we would be interested in featuring Freedy Johnston in the series, I bolted upstairs to my wife's studio to show it to her. I've been a fan of Freedy's work for over 20 years and couldn't believe that we'd be able to work with him. Pressing record and hearing that voice come through the headphones was a treat I'll never forget.
We used Peluso's 2247se on Freedy's vocals and their P-84 on his Martin. I love using these mics in tandem.

Austin Miller embodies the troubadour's spirit: tours at a near-constant pace and crafts really great songs inspired by a life set against an ever-changing backdrop.
We were lucky enough to have Austin swing by earlier this year and share this little ditty with us. We used Peluso's P-49 on his vocal and their 2247se on his guitar - a combination that I've grown to love and strongly recommend as additions to your mic locker!

Peter Mulvey made the harrowing trip to Pittsburgh from Buffalo in near-blizzard conditions almost the entire way and man, we're glad he did! He is an amazing story-teller in both his songs and in conversation - a gifted troubadour and a new friend.
I loved the combination of the Peluso P-49 on his vocals and the 2247se on his guitar - the detail, warmth and depth those mics captured really make you feel like he's living in your head.

San Francisco's Megan Slankard has more going for her than seems reasonably fair. She's whip smart, funny, a really solid guitar player and then she starts singing and blows the (unfinished) roof off the joint. It was a treat having her and Jeff Campbell in to sing a couple songs for us. These kids are welcome back any time!
Just about anytime I'm able to combine Peluso's P-12 on a vocal with their P-84 on an acoustic, I feel lucky. It just works so, so very well and Megan and Jeff prove no exception.

Spirits and Melchizedek Children
This is everything that I love about doing this video series: A fantastic band with an original, signature sound and then every single one of them is a treat to be around. Such was the case with Atlanta's Spirits and the Melchizedek Children. You can check out more of their music here: http://satmc.bandcamp.com/
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's P-12 on Jason's vocals. These days, it's always the first mic that I grab for vocals. We used their TR-14 tube-ribbon mic on the lead guitar and the 2247se as a drum overhead.

The End of America is that rare group that brings together voices that blend so perfectly that you just want to chain them up in your basement and make them sing for you. So that's exactly what we did for this Yellow Couch Session. The result is this ridiculously beautiful and haunting song.

I love finding out about new bands and am especially glad to have worked with this one: Black Little Birds. BLB features Morgan Erina, whom you may remember from our video with one of her former projects, Broken Fences (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nU0P...). I really like where this band is heading.
We used Peluso Microhpone Lab's Vacuum Tube Bottle mic on Morgan and Crystal's vocals. There's a clarity and warmth with this microphone that I'm nuts about. We also used their P-49 on the bass and their TR-14 tube-ribbon condenser on the Vox AC15, through which we ran the keys. I love the 49 for deeper sources and the TR-14 on the Vox is just dreamy. We ran the drum machine directly.

Matthew Sutton: Everything Must Go
http://www.empiremusiconline.com
Matt came in to support the incredible Pittsburgh songwriter Terry O'Hara, who performs under the moniker Summer-WInter (their video together will be released shortly). While we had Matt him trapped in the studio, we talked him in to doing one of his own songs and I'm awfully glad he obliged. The lyrics to this song are incredibly visual and poetic. The line "two dogs blurry fighting" has stuck with me since I first listened to this track - so good!
Matthew Sutton's work has appeared on some of my favorite records of the last decade. He's worked with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's Alec Ornsworth on his solo projects, and with the bands Ida and Naysayer. He's also made some great music with his own band The Malarkies (http://www.last.fm/music/The+Malarkies) and was the audio producer on one of my favorite video series, Bowery Presents: Track + Field. If you're not familiar with the series, type it into that little search bar above.
We used Peluso's P-12 and the P-84. This is the combo I almost always start with these days for solo performers. The way that they work together is really difficult to beat.
Audio for Yellow Couch Sessions is recorded and mixed by Steven Foxbury of Yellow Couch Studio. Video for Matthew Sutton was shot and edited by my man Justin Visnesky of Junior Varsity Studios. Thanks for watching!
